Covered in confidence
Mirror Mirror Hair & Nail Salon now offers wigs and beanies
“When a child decides they want to shave their hair, it’s one more thing on top of what they’re already going through. They often cry when getting it done, but we try our best to turn that frown into a bright smile. Now, we can do that by giving them wigs and beanies. They walk out of our salon with confidence. For the salon staff, seeing their days brighten and watching them smile fills our hearts with joy.” – Jasmine Villareal, Mirror Mirror Hair & Nail Salon manager
The Mirror Mirror Hair & Nail Salon inside Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth is a place of escape for our patients. It’s a no-needle, doctor-free, medicine-less zone! It’s a place where they can go to get out of their rooms and maybe, just for a little bit, forget why they are at a hospital. It’s a place for them to relax and be pampered.
But also, it is a place for comfort and help during difficult or trying times.
Imagine a child who has recently been diagnosed with cancer, whose hair is falling out from chemotherapy treatments. Picture a teenager with part of their head shaved to reveal a fresh set of stitches or a kid who is pulling their own hair out because they are stressed and anxious. These are just some reasons why patients come to Mirror Mirror to have their hair styled or even shaved.
These can be very vulnerable times for patients, not only having their hair cut or shaved, but then walking out into a busy medical center, amid the eyes of strangers.
In these moments, there has been one popular request: These patients and their caregivers have repeatedly asked Mirror Mirror staff for wigs or beanies—those soft, warm knitted hats. Thanks to funding from Circle of Friends, a local nonprofit dedicated to helping kids with cancer, the salon is now stocked with a variety of wigs and beanies from which patients can choose.
A lot of thought and care went into picking out the perfect products, so that they would be comfortable and stylish. And each one comes with an extra dose of confidence.
