Michaels Stores: The Art of Giving

Art and creative expression are essential parts of any child's life. At Cook Children's, they take on a therapeutic role and are often used as emotional outlets, distractions or therapy tools for our patients. Partnering with a company like Michaels stores, a place where creativity happens, seems like a natural fit.

Michaels Stores and their charity partner, Starlight Children's Foundation, have been partners of Cook Children's for almost 10 years. Nationally, Michaels Stores and Starlight Children's Foundation partner together to provide the art of healing to thousands of pediatric patients. They bring creativity, comfort and care to the Starlight community of more than 800 partner facilities throughout the U.S. and Canada, which includes Cook Children's. Through this collaboration, they have given generously to our Creative Artist in Residence Programme.

In collaboration with corporate giving, Michaels employees also donate their time, organizing and staffing craft stations at the annual Peter Pan Birthday Club party, a celebration for children who ask for gifts to support Cook Children's in lieu of birthday presents. Also, Michaels Hurst location held a book drive last year and donated more than 750 books for our patients.

In addition to their investment in creativity and play, Michaels also sees the importance of other Cook Children's health initiatives and services. Over the years, they have supported our Children's Fund and Save a Smile program, as well.

Last year, a group of Michaels employees donated a "fun center" to the patients at Cook Children's Medical Center. The center is a gaming system on wheels and can travel from patient room to patient room.

We are grateful for this partnership and for all of the smiles, creativity and healing that has come as a result of their generosity.
